Father’s Day is celebrated before the big 4th of July celebrations in the USA. Father’s day is a global day of celebration with many people celebrating this special day around the world, with each country following its own traditions and celebrating in its own unique fashion. Since it’s always nice to learn about other cultures and customs, we thought it would be fun to take a look at how this special holiday is celebrated around the globe.
- Finland – Father’s Day in Finland takes place on the 2nd Sunday of November and is a day when dad’s get to sleep in, relax and enjoy breakfasts prepared especially for them. Sometimes schools join in on the celebration too, honoring dads by inviting them for coffee and cake on the Friday before Father’s Day.
- Germany – In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 6th Sunday after Easter and is a day that Dads devote to traditional male activities such as sports or drinking, while Moms stay home and look after the kids.
- Japan – In Japan, Father’s Day falls on the 3rd Sunday of June and is a day for children to present flowers, sweets and hand-made gifts to their fathers. There is also often a seafood-based feast to celebrate the day.
- Mexico – Father’s Day in Mexico also falls on the 3rd Sunday of June. Festivities for this holiday start off with fathers participating in a 21K citywide race in Mexico City, which is then followed by a delicious feast that includes traditional pan dulce or sweet bread.
- Nepal – Depending on the year, Father’s Day in Nepal falls in late August or early September. Here, children honor their fathers by preparing them special treats to eat.
- New Zealand – In New Zealand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of September. Children celebrate their fathers with special handmade cards and treats and sometimes prepare them their favorite meals.
- Russia – Father’s Day in Russia falls on February 23 and is celebrated with public parades and processions. It’s also common for women to give men gifts in both personal and professional settings.
- South Africa – Like many countries, South Africa celebrates Father’s Day on the 3rd Sunday of June. Also like many countries, Father’s Day in South Africa is celebrated with gift giving and picnics. Fishing is also popular on Father’s Day and the fish caught is often served for Father’s Day dinner.
- Thailand – Father’s Day in Thailand is December 5th, which is also National Day. This day honors the country’s founding father, Bhumibol Adulyadej, and it is customary for everyone to wear yellow and for children to present canna flowers to their fathers.
- USA – Father’s Day was proclaimed a national holiday in the US back in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson and signed into law in 1972 by President Richard Nixon. Although it’s common to celebrate Father’s Day with BBQs, family get-togethers, and sports days, Father’s Day in the USA sometimes takes a back seat to Mother’s Day and Graduation Day as it falls on the 3rd Sunday of June – right in between those other two important holidays.
