While engagement rings have traditionally been more detailed and elaborate than wedding rings, no one ever said that tradition must dictate fashion. There’s no reason the wedding band shouldn’t be just as striking and impressive as the engagement ring. After all, where the engagement ring symbolizes the promise of commitment, it’s the wedding ring that symbolizes the actual commitment, the official bond of marriage.
Indeed, the wedding band deserves a design fitting of its status, which is why many brides today prefer a band that is more sophisticated and elegant. Today, wedding bands for women are trending away from the standard simple gold or silver band and instead designed to be just as stunning as the engagement ring. They’re also increasingly individual and unique. Many women are opting for custom wedding bands that are crafted according to their unique style and preferences.

But First, a Little History
Wedding bands have a long history, dating way back to the Ancient Egyptians who believed the circular shape of the ring represented eternity. They also believed that the fourth finger from the thumb (the ring finger) contained a vein that led directly to the heart so rings were given to lovers to represent devotion and worn on the ring finger. The Greeks adopted the custom when they conquered Egypt and later the custom was adopted by the Romans when they conquered Greece. Eventually, the custom of giving wedding rings for matrimony spread throughout Europe and other parts of the world, changing in style according to different regions and cultures (much like different engagement ring traditions around the world). Today, of course, it is still traditional to give or exchange wedding rings at the wedding ceremony.
Uniqueness Over Conventional
However, while the tradition of giving or exchanging wedding rings during the wedding ceremony hasn’t changed, wedding ring styles have. Women today are opting for a wedding band that has a more prominent look on the hand. They are looking for alternative wedding band styles; wedding rings that are unique and express personal style and individuality.
Wedding rings with multiple gemstones in a channel setting or set in a special pattern, wedding bands with a fleur de lis design or other dramatic patterns, elegant two-toned wedding bands, bride and groom matching wedding bands, and wedding bands that are designed to perfectly match the engagement ring are just some of the elegant and modern styles available today. (And even though this post is about women’s wedding rings, don’t forget about the groom! Men’s wedding bands are also more elegant and stylish today too; grooms deserve the same special consideration!)
